Yup. Constantly reminding myself of this too. Just because I like it when other people do it, doesn’t mean I like to do it. I know thjs when I watch the Olympics, so why doesn’t it translate so easily to art?

Yes! I love watching athletics but have yet to try pole vaulting, but when it comes to art and crafts, the struggle is real!

Gosh I wish I'd found this article a couple weeks ago before I invested in my first neocolor2s after a year of going back and forth on them. I really wanted to buy the portrait set but at this point you can only get it through Amazon and with import and duty to Canada it puts them at $15 each! So I bought singles instead. Thanks for the info and the reminder to go play with them today

I hope you love them!

Since I have accepted that collecting (and swooning over) art materials (yay, color charts!) is a separate hobby from creating art/sketchbook work, I am much more relaxed about this- and actually enjoy BOTH hobbies ☺️

Dani Williams's avatar

Ooh. I need to adopt this mindset. Except creating the art is how I make a living so I have to remember to actually do more of that and save the colour chart hobby for weekends πŸ˜„

OMG if I had a job right now I'd beg to buy that Rhino. 😍 Love the personality in it!

Dani Williams's avatar

I would be ashamed to let anyone see that rhino in real life. πŸ˜„

You are wrong! 😘

I want to try these out so badly. Like I got a lot of oil pastels that I really honestly need to use up first, but afterwards like I really want to try some of these. I usually only get white, black, red, and blue for my classroom, so I don't order like the full color sets.

Dani Williams's avatar

They’re very different from oil pastels though so I think you’re totally justified in having both πŸ˜„

This really resonated with me as I’ve been battling with Neocolours for several years now in the same way as you! I see so many beautiful works created either with them as the main material or as an accent but I just can’t figure out how to use them in a way that works for me. Every now and again I get them out and literally just play (mixing colours, mark making etc) and have so much fun but then that doesn’t translate into my actual work. It’s definitely okay to say a material isn’t for you, but still enjoy playing with it.

Dani Williams's avatar

That is exactly how I use them! Just feel them on the paper, look at which colours go together and that's it! I'm genuinely in awe of people who use them as their main material, especially when it's used dry.

Love your rhino and the autumn landscape! I hope you keep using them :) Putting these crayons on my wish list, but I get the feeling I'll feel conflicted about them too. Just wanna try all the things!!

It’s good to experiment with as many art supplies and techniques as you can! I just let it distract me from the illustration work I should be doing. But I definitely recommend getting just four or five colours to start with. And I can confirm that if you buy a set and don’t like them, they’re easy to sell on eBay πŸ˜„

Yes - a few colours... That's the ticket! I'm so interested to see how they react with water..

Wonderful article. I just started playing with neocolor II very recently after seeing someone post a picture and I loved the colors. I am in the very early stages of experimenting, so I really appreciate this article. It definitely takes getting used. Thanks so much also for the list of other artists, I knew some, but not all so will definitely check them out πŸ˜„.

Thank you. I regularly do an Instagram search of "Neocolors" to discover new artists and see how they are using the materials. I should stop looking really because watching what other artists do always makes me want to throw out everything I know and start again! πŸ˜„ Good luck with the Neocolors.

I love Neocolor IIs! It took me a while to figure out how to use them, because they’re so versatile. I like scribbling down color with them and painting over them with watercolor.

Dani Williams's avatar

That sounds good. I still love them while hating almost everything I make with them πŸ˜„

Hahaha, I was the same way for a while! Just keep using them, one day it’ll all make sense. :)

Neocolors II are fun. I like the Neocolor I too, because you can play with watercolour on top of it, just as we did in primary school.

I love Caran d’ Ache Neocolors too!! By the way, your art using them is beautiful too! Don’t be hard on yourself! 😎

Mine are also in a biscuit tin, hehe. I love them, but I use them as I feel to... Sometimes with water, sometimes just as wet and sometimes just for finishing details on the watercolours sketch painting.
